Violante of Vilaragut, the last queen consort of the Kingdom of Mallorca, was the second wife of King Jaume III of Mallorca and the stepmother to Isabella of Mallorca and Jaume IV, prince consort of Naples. Violante is believed to be one of two possible authors of the fourteenth-century poem, La Reyna de Mallorques. The poem’s discussion of imprisonment, trauma, and incarceration makes it an important source for understanding Violante’s time as a prisoner of the Crown of Aragon between 1349 and 1358. Violante was jailed by Pere IV of Aragon in the direct aftermath of Mallorca’s annexation by the Crown following the Battle of Llucmajor in 1349. Following her release, Violante remarried and lived the remainder of her life in the Kingdom of France.
