Aithbhreac Inghean Coirceadail ( fl. 1460–1470) made an early and extraordinary contribution to the male-dominated tradition of Classical Gaelic poetry, the historical literary dialect shared by Ireland and Scotland. Women could not formally operate as professional poets in these contexts. However, Aithbhreac’s work proves that some elite women did, indeed, break social, educational, artistic, and gender barriers to produce accomplished and highly regarded Classical Gaelic verse.

摘要

Aithbhreac Inghean Coirceadail ( fl. 1460–1470) made an early and extraordinary contribution to the male-dominated tradition of Classical Gaelic poetry, the historical literary dialect shared by Ireland and Scotland. Women could not formally operate as professional poets in these contexts. However, Aithbhreac’s work proves that some elite women did, indeed, break social, educational, artistic, and gender barriers to produce accomplished and highly regarded Classical Gaelic verse.
