Catherine of Bologna (Caterina Vigri, 1413–1463), was a Poor Clare mystic, preacher and writer in fifteenth-century Italy. She was an influential leader of the Observant Reform movement and served as novice mistress at her Clarissan community in Ferrara. Between 1456 and 1463, she was abbess of a Clarissan community in Bologna. Her most notable work is an autobiographic treatise, the Sette armi spirituali (The Seven Spiritual Weapons), published posthumously, instructing sisters on how to battle the devil through the cultivation of virtue. It also details Caterina’s own visions. Caterina’s works are written in the vernacular and generally emphasize her identity as a preacher and teacher. She was beatified in 1524 and canonized as a saint in 1712.
