Gofukakusa-in no Nijō (Lady Nijō)
摘要
Gofukakusa-in no Nijō (Lady Nijō) (b. 1258) was a court lady who served Retired Emperor Gofukakusa (1243–1304) and was also his lover. Her diary Towazugatari records her life from the age of 14 through 49, in two parts. The first part is a recollection of the period during which time she served Gofukakusa. It reveals her relationships not only with Gofukakusa but also several other men. The second part concerns her life as a nun travelling widely in the country. This part also contains episodes of her union with Gofukakusa and his death. From today’s perspective, her treatment at the hands of Gofukakusa is clearly deeply problematic. Nonetheless, Towazugatari attracts modern readership for its candid descriptions of what a woman in the aristocratic society of medieval Japan experienced, thought, and agonized over.
