The Festis and the Passion of Our Lord Ihesu Crist is a nearly complete cycle of meditative prayers written by an anonymous “religious sustir” at the request of her fellow nuns; the unique copy is found in Bodl. MS. Holkham Misc 41. The texts provide female readers with a sequence of meditative prayers based on incidents in the life of Christ; the female author employs language characteristic of a wide range of late vernacular devotional texts, including some of a mystical nature. Scholars have posited several identities for the author, who may have been a nun or anchoress, and disagree whether the text is necessarily Brigittine in origin.
