The poet known only as Willetrudis may have been a twelfth-century nun at Hohenvart, Germany, or, perhaps, the thirteenth-century abbess of Wilton Abbey, England. What we know, however, is that Willetrudis composed a retelling of the biblical story of Susanna and the Elders (Daniel 13), offering a rare, uncompromising critique of the Elders’ lechery and early protofeminist reworking of the tale in Susanna’s favor, cast in complex Leonine hexameter Latin verse.
