The Welsh Law Codes, generally known as the Law of Hywel (Cyfraith Hywel), are a body of laws developed and used in Wales in the Middle Ages. While they are homegrown legal texts, written for lawyers by lawyers, there is considerable evidence of extensive legal learning in some parts of the texts, and several aspects reflect European legal thinking of their time. The law texts are sophisticated, scholarly works reflecting the learning and cultural context of their writing. Despite popular assumptions that Cyfraith Hywel was “fairer” to women than other legal systems, women’s rights were very limited, and they were not considered full legal persons in most situations.
