Old English Judith
摘要
The biblical Book of Judith has been frequently adapted and used as a subject in the arts throughout the Middle Ages to the present day. The anonymous Old English poem Judith, which survives in a single copy, presents a condensed retelling in alliterative verse with occasional end rhyme. Its style is reminiscent of heroic epic and the narrative excludes all reference to Judith’s seductive attire or deceitful speech. The focus is on her courage, wisdom, and steadfast faith, which is rewarded by God granting her, and subsequently her people, victory over their enemies. The poem is of interest to the study of early women’s writing because of its powerful representation of its heroine.
