María de Ajofrín (?–1489) was a Hieronymite beata who enjoyed a reputation for sanctity in the Castile of the fifteenth century due to her miraculous powers, her stigmata, and the heavenly visions and revelations she received, which were charged with aspirations for spiritual purity and religious reform. Her interests were in line with the interests of the Church and the monarchy, which at the time were contemplating the creation of the Spanish Inquisition. All this contributed to the authorization of María and the composition of a hagiography by the prior Juan de Corrales. Among the extraordinary events of her life, her miraculous learning of letters stands out, which allowed her to develop an important epistolary activity, unusual for a plebeian beata but which had a great institutional and social impact.
