Constanza de Castilla was a Dominican nun and prioress of royal blood and one of the first Spanish women writers of whom we have evidence. In her Book of Devotions, the spiritual concerns of the time – especially interested in the humanity of Christ and his Passion – are manifested and enter into dialogue with the particular concerns of the author: her desire to restore the memory and diminished honor of her family, her dedication to improve the life within her monastery of Santo Domingo el Real de Madrid – both materially and spiritually, and her desire to progress on the path of perfection of the soul and help her sisters to do so.
