Bridget (Birgitta) of Sweden
摘要
Bridget of Sweden was a visionary, prophet, wife, mother, widow, and pilgrim who received a series of divinely inspired revelations for about thirty years of her life. Bridget, or Birgitta as she is commonly known, who was born in Sweden in 1302/1303 and died on 23 July 1373 in Rome, is also famous for mixing the contemplative with the active life. Her visionary gifts compelled her to rebuke the foremost ecclesiastical and worldly leaders of her time. Deeply concerned with the salvation of humanity, the state of the world, and current political affairs, she was profoundly invested in a series of reforms intended to renew the discipleship to Christ and God. These concerns for restoration and revitalization eventually led to the foundation of the Birgittine order, which flourished in the later Middle Ages throughout the European lands. After several attempts at canonization in the wake of her death, she was proclaimed a saint in 1391.
