The Miroir des bonnes femmes is an example of the prolific late medieval didactic literature focused on the conduct of women. Written in the vernacular, the Miroir is composed of exemplary narratives of bad women and good women that provide models of behavior to be avoided or emulated. The Bible is the chief source for the stories, with a variety of non-biblical examples added. The Miroir was an important—although unacknowledged—source for the Knight of the Tower ( Chevalier de la Tour Landry) when he compiled a conduct book for his daughters in the fourteenth century. Through translations and editions of the Knight’s book, the Miroir stories of bad and good women were widely circulated throughout Europe. The Miroir itself, however, has not to date been edited, but remains in two full and one partial manuscript copies.
