Jacques de Vitry, Sermones vulgares (Sermons to the People)
摘要
Jacques de Vitry (c.1160–1240) was a preeminent preacher of the thirteenth century. He supported female religious movements, promoted crusading efforts, and strived to bring about religious reform initiatives. Jacques also endeavored to equip fellow preachers. To that end, he compiled over 400 Latin sermons between 1229 and 1240, including 194 sermons based on the liturgical year ( sermones de tempore), 115 sermons for feast days ( Sermones sanctis), 25 sermons based on the first three chapters of Genesis ( feriales et communes), and 74 sermons addressed to specific social groups ( Sermones ad status uel uulgares) including religious and lay categories (Longère 2013). This entry provides a brief introduction to the author before turning to his Sermones ad status collection, which includes sermons addressed explicitly to women.
