Amulets were used by women during childbirth to alleviate their fears and protect them and their unborn child from harm. This chapter considers English childbirth amulets and, particularly “birth girdles,” extant fifteenth-century textual amulets in the form of parchment rolls which could be affixed to a woman in labor. These birth girdles can be placed into the category of “women’s writing” as they provide rare textual insight into the parturiency during the late Middle Ages. The contents, application, and attitudes toward these girdles are highlighted, as well as their connection to evidence of the wider ritual application of childbirth amulets and charms found in contemporary medical compilations.
