Introduction
摘要
The Introduction introduces the book by explaining how religion and politics are interrelated within the context of the Anthropocene. In the modern world, political reason and secularism do not simply replace religion, but define a limited realm for private religious faith and practice. This separation between public political reason and private religion is challenged in a post-secularist world. Postsecularism is correlated with the breakdown of modern liberalism as economic growth becomes more difficult and expensive, resulting in financialized neoliberal capitalism and the concentration of wealth among fewer nations, corporations, and people. The philosophy of New Materialism is introduced, and then applied to the idea of energy transformation. Energy becomes a key notion to frame a new materialist engagement with religion and politics. Some critical engagements of New Materialism are considered and acknowledged, before turning to a summary description of the individual chapters.
