This chapter investigates the marginalized figures and events surrounding Mei Lanfang’s 1930 U.S. tour, focusing on overlooked contributors and local American media coverage. By analyzing paratexts such as local newspapers from 34 states, it highlights the critical yet underappreciated roles of theater staff, journalists, Chinese Americans, and others. The study proposes Marginalization Studies as a valuable framework to enrich mainstream narratives, uncover hidden influences, and deepen understanding of U.S.-China cultural exchange. Emphasizing local public opinion, grounded theory, and cultural diplomacy, this chapter reveals how marginal actors and events helped shape Mei’s success and fostered enduring cross-cultural dialogue between the two nations.
