Study of the Performance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant in the Vegetable Oil Refining Industry

Vegetable oil refineries generate wastewater loaded with pollutants, oils, fats, and metals, contributing significantly to pollution and aesthetic degradation of aquatic ecosystems. This study has made it possible to diagnose the condition of the Ain Harrouda Crystal-Lesieur sewage treatment plant through activated sludge to combat pollution by oils and fats. The results showed that fluctuating flow and organic load are the most feared enemies for optimal station operation. The percentage of COD, BOD5, oils, fats, and MES removal shows considerable fluctuations over time, reflecting a variation in the quality of treated waters. High removal efficiencies were obtained, 98% for oil and grease, 82% for COD, and 95% for BOD5. The removal of pollutant loads in oils and fats in COD and BOD5 is touched by many factors like the physico-chemical characteristics of wastewater, the station’s operation, and the aeration tank’s performance. The degradation of organic matter remains satisfactory. However, further optimization is necessary to improve the efficiency of the sewage treatment plant.
