Climate change characterized by recurring periods of drought, combined with the evolution of our water practices and population growth, strongly urges us to rethink our water management models to ensure sustainable and rational access to water for all. This is why the recovery of treated wastewater (RTWW) and its reuse represents a circular economy process that provides an excellent alternative to meet these new challenges sustainably. The practice of treated wastewater reuse (TWWR), also known as water reuse, offers many benefits at various levels. Three main benefits of treated wastewater can be distinguished: (i) Environmental benefits are reflected in the presence of beneficial substances in this treated wastewater, which helps limit the use of pesticides and other toxic products in nature, particularly in agricultural crops. This also contributes to maintaining a satisfactory level of groundwater, thus avoiding the deterioration of underground water sources. Finally, these waters can be discharged into coastal areas without risk to the coastal marine environment. (ii) The societal benefits are linked to the application of circular economy principles through the reuse of treated wastewater. This helps combat waste and creates new resources without relying on the extraction of drinking water. Additionally, it contributes to reducing the global water stress index, which is estimated to affect over 40% of the world's population. (iii) Economic benefits are ensured by the reuse of treated wastewater, allowing industries and agriculture, among others, to reduce their water consumption by 40–90%. This is significant savings for businesses and farmers. Nations disadvantaged by water scarcity could find a sustainable solution for water management in the reuse of treated wastewater. The recovery and recycling of treated wastewater align with circular economy principles by avoiding unnecessary waste and enabling the valorization of resources for other purposes.
