Diabetes mellitus is a chronic medical condition characterized by alterations in glucose metabolism. As of 2021, the International Diabetes Federation estimates that 537 million adults (aged 20–79) are living with diabetes with a prevalence of 10.5%. Lifestyle interventions have long been considered pillars of treatment but are often overshadowed by drug therapy. In this chapter, we will discuss the integration of nutrition, fitness, and mindfulness into the treatment of diabetes. Nutritional intake and physical activity have direct impacts on glucose metabolism; therefore, modifications made to both can have significant impacts on the degree of control. As modifications are made, it is important to consider their relationship with diabetes pharmacotherapy. Integrating mindfulness into diabetes care has the potential to empower patients and help with managing diabetes distress and burnout.
