Molecular Markers in Oilseed Breeding: A Review

The combination of molecular markers and data mining techniques has completely revolutionized breeding in oilseed crops, increasing the efficiency and accuracy of breeding high-yielding and resilient crop varieties. Molecular markers become essential for screening desirable plant traits at the genetic level, allowing marker-assisted selection in breeding programs. On the other hand, molecular data mining makes it possible to extract valuable knowledge out of huge genomic datasets, upon which breeders can support decisions on considering genetic diversity and trait associations. The present chapter deals with the role of molecular markers in oilseed breeding and how advances in these technologies optimize breeding strategies. This would imply that, through molecular markers and sophisticated data analysis, researchers can speed up the breeding cycle, enhance the quality of oilseeds, and enhance manners of sustainability given changing climatic conditions and pressures from pests and diseases.
