The 2024 European Parliament election in Austria saw the populist radical right Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) emerge as the largest party in a nationwide contest for the first time since its founding in 1956, reflecting a broader European trend of rising far-right parties. The two ruling parties, the Christian Democratic Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) and the Greens (GRÜNE) experienced significant losses, while the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) stagnated and NEOS—The New Austria and Liberal Forum (NEOS) gained a second seat. The campaign was overshadowed by a scandal involving the Greens’ top candidate, diverting attention from critical European issues like migration, climate change and international conflicts. Despite Austria’s traditionally Eurosceptic stance, the election revealed a sharp divide in attitudes towards European integration. This chapter analyses electoral dynamics, campaign strategies and media coverage, contextualising the results within Austria’s political history and broader European trends.
