To European Union-wide observers, Northern Ireland can be difficult to understand from a political point of view. This small country of almost two million people is, and has always been, part of the United Kingdom. It is also geographically part of the island of Ireland and the only part of the United Kingdom with a land border with the EU. Brexit has posed significant, often ill-understood challenges for all. The EU’s constructive approach to Northern Ireland illustrates the continuing relevance of Jean Monnet’s approach to integration and Jacques Delors’ commitment to removing internal borders for a single market to sustaining the concept of Europe as a democratic peace project to be uniquely shaped by successive generations.

摘要

To European Union-wide observers, Northern Ireland can be difficult to understand from a political point of view.
