Spain’s European Parliament (EP) elections cannot be understood without the three elements that have influenced Spanish political events in the last ten years: the reconfiguration of the Spanish political system, the Catalan question, and the emergence of the radical right. In 2024, the campaign was more Europeanised than ever before, but national factors continue to be the most relevant factors in explaining the EP election outcome, which has had the biggest impact on national politics since Spain first participated in the EP elections, following its accession to the EU in 1986. Overall, the 2024 EP elections did not significantly alter Spain’s stance towards the EU but emphasised the ongoing relevance of national politics. The elections marked the end of a period of significant political change in Spain and have shown how nationalisation of elections affects EP as well regional and local elections.
