In 2024, the election of the European Parliament was but one of many elections across the globe, and the first since the United Kingdom had left the European Union in 2020, after first joining it in 1973, and 45 years since the first direct election of the European Parliament in 1979. These five-yearly elections have been controversial and transformative since their inception. This chapter outlines their development and impact on the balance of power among the key legislative institutions, the priorities of the EU, and evolving deliberative role of its citizens. The 2024 election of the European Parliament illustrates the gradual emergence of a supranational public sphere where the EU’s values and democratic resilience continue to be challenged.
