The super-electoral 2024 was the year of three elections in Croatia with parliamentary, European, and the first round of the presidential elections all occurring within a year. The 2024 European Parliament (EP) elections in Croatia were won by the dominant party in the Croatian party system, the right-of-centre HDZ, which has been the ruling party in Croatia since 2015. The centre-left opposition SDP performed worse than in 2019 despite winning the same number of seats. This was in line with the trends of the social democrats in the last couple of election cycles in Croatia. The aim of this chapter is to locate the EP elections in Croatia within specific political and societal context, which will help explain the results, as well as offer an overview of the electoral system rules that might have influenced the result in the end. Even though the focus of this chapter is on the 2024 EP elections, the results and party strategies will be put into context by comparing them with the 2019 EP elections by reflecting on the similarities and differences between them.
