Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive public health issue that transcends geographical, cultural, and socio-economic boundaries, affecting over a billion individuals worldwide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines IPV as abusive behavior occurring within romantic relationships, encompassing current and former partners. While women are disproportionately affected, IPV victimization among men remains understudied. The highest recorded incidences of IPV occur in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, with reported lifetime prevalence rates of 33% and 35%, respectively. IPV manifests in various forms, IPV, frequently linked to power imbalances, is underreported due to cultural barriers yet poses significant risks to victims. This chapter engages in conceptual clarification of IPV, its effects, including examining different forms of IPV and its co-occurrence nature and how IPV manifests in the African diasporic communities.
