The African diaspora, particularly Sub-Saharan African immigrants, represents a complex and culturally diverse demographic with unique cultural, socio-economic, and migratory experiences. While they excelled in different areas of endeavors in their host nations, including impressive educational attainment, and a significant presence in professional fields and sports, this success is accompanied by challenges, notably intimate partner violence (IPV), which has received limited scholarly attention. The accumulative pressure arising from acculturative stress, systemic inequities, and deeply ingrained patriarchal gender norms has precipitated the prevalence of IPV among African immigrants. The transition from traditional African gender roles to the egalitarian expectations of Western societies creates tensions that manifest in intimate relationships. Some African men, struggling with altered power dynamics, engage in coercive control, contributing to IPV and, in extreme cases, intimate partner homicide. The legal consequences of IPV, including incarceration and family fragmentation, further complicate the social fabric of African immigrant communities. This introductory chapter presents an overview of IPV within the African diaspora.
