The research work centered in Bahir Dar city required an assessment of the present level of public transport service provision and determined the underlying factors that impede the efficient provision of public transport. Through a descriptive research method involving questionnaires, interviews, and field observations, a total of 384 questionnaires data were collected and interviews were conducted with 17 minibus taxi drivers, 38 Bajaj taxi drivers, one bus driver, one official from the transport offices, seven chairpersons from the Bajaj transporter association, and one chairperson from the minibus taxi transporter association. The collected data were analyzed through narrative analysis. Findings indicated that in Bahir Dar, the average distance to access public transportation was 588 m, with an 18-min average wait time and a monthly expense of $7.16. The study identified availability, accessibility, affordability, and quality as significant issues within the city’s public transportation system. Recommendations were put forth to address these challenges, including conducting a detailed study to adjust public transport tariffs, transitioning from Bajaj vehicles to mass transit, optimizing terminal placement, and enhancing adherence to transport regulations.
