Review on Green Solutions: The Role of Bioenzymes in Sustainable Construction

The construction industry is increasingly using bio-based enzymes in infrastructures as sustainable solutions, especially in soil stabilization, road construction, concrete improvement, and waste management. Enzyme stabilizations offer quality improvements, environmentally friendly alternatives, and less cost consumption as compared to traditional soil stabilizers and concrete additives. In addition, enzymes have suitable characteristics for sustainable approaches, such as being natural, nonflammable, noncorrosive, and biodegradable. Enzymes have important characteristics and mechanisms that make them suitable for soil and cement particles. A cation of positive ions of enzymes is favorable to fit and interact with the negative surface of soil and cement particles. Nowadays, bioenzymes are used in soil stabilization, road surface improvement, and in cement concrete through enzyme-induced calcite precipitate (EICP). Although the benefits of bioenzymes in civil engineering works are reasonably attractive, there are challenges in terms of standardized dosage and understanding proprietary compositions. Future research would be required to synergize bioenzymes and microorganisms to maximize the benefits of using enzymatic improvement with stable solutions.
