GIS and Remote Sensing-Based Agricultural Land Suitability Analysis in South Gondar Zone, Ethiopia

Agriculture highly influences Ethiopian economic advancement as it is the main livelihood and employing sector. To fulfill food and agricultural raw materials, it is acute to expand and intensify agricultural land. Yet, the agricultural land potential was not well explored and documented. The suitability of agricultural land in the South Gondar zone was not studied. Consequently, it is vital to align crop needs with available resources by conducting a suitability analysis of the land for better productivity. This research sought to study land suitability analysis using a multi-criteria approach based on geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) in the South Gondar zone. Global geospatial data sources, literature reviews, and field observations were in the study. Seven parameters were selected and prepared as raster layers on a GIS interface. The weights of the raster layers were further calculated for appropriateness using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The agricultural land was then classified as highly, moderately, and marginally suitable and unsuitable using weighted overlay analysis. The results indicated that 26% of the study area was found to be highly suitable, while 70% and 4% were found to be moderately and marginally suitable for agriculture, respectively.
