Mixture Theory Modeling of Compressible Two-Phase Systems

In Chaps. 6 and 7, the discussed two-fluid models were limited to the stiffened-gas equation of states. The stiffened-gas equation of state, although simple, does not have sufficient accuracy [1]. Furthermore, the discussed model does not support phase change. The mixture-theory modeling allows the use of a more general equation of states and mass transfer among different phases, and thus, results in higher fidelity of the computations. We discuss in this chapter a simple model based on mixture theory [2, 3] as an introduction to this rich and currently developing subject. Saurel and Pantano present a review of the diffuse-interface capturing of compressible two-phase flows [4].
