Rural tourism and ecological diversity in protected areas have gained significant research interest. It is reshaping the potential of sustainable community development despite persistent economic, natural and socio-cultural challenges. This chapter summarises some of the key messages, recommendations, practical implications, and limitations of this focus area. The lack of policies and regulations hampers the economic development of rural social entrepreneurs. Marginalised communities, such as women and youth, can reap substantial benefits through increased financial investment, capacity building, skills development, and education. Pro-poor tourism is highlighted as a vital approach to poverty alleviation, especially if local community farmers are integrated into the supply chain of wildlife and protected areas. Transparent management and community participation are the cornerstones of rural tourism product development, economic growth, and sustainable tourism. Marketing strategies informed by visitor management tools enhance visitor satisfaction, leading to positive word of mouth to promote rural destinations. Future research needs to focus on methodological improvements and practical policy implementations as proposed by the Southern African Framework for Rural Tourism and Protected Areas. Governments, social entrepreneurs, and community leaders have a critical role to play in the advancement of rural tourism development and the conservation of protected areas.
