Sustainability is one of the biggest concerns in the modern world. The use of Digital Twins is one way of approaching this topic in a city planning context. Rural areas are often overlooked when it comes to sustainability planning, despite their unique challenges and high relevance. We therefore develop a Digital Twin of a rural area with the goal of promoting sustainable logistics that lead to the reduction of CO \(_2\) . In this paper, based on a review of the current state of Digital Twins in a city context we discuss challenges of Digital Twins in general. We then review our multi-layer approach, its advantages and limitations for further discussion on its applicability. Specifically, we confer about our approach towards psychological and social theories, data acquisition and usage, as well as interaction between the model and the physical world, shedding light on the unique challenges and advantages, and aiming for an ethical approach towards the matter at hand.
