Many regional features are preserved in the wooden architecture of Eastern Fujian, China. One such practice is known locally as kangliang, which involves using large beams running along the longitudinal axis of a building to support the horizontal upper woodern framework and create a large interior space. This technique is commonly seen in the main hall of public buildings related to local folk beliefs and residential buildings. While similar technique can be found in neighboring areas, examples in Eastern Fujian provide a rare opportunity for continuous observation of the evolutionary path of kangliang technique. Based on the combing and classification of the local examples of team research, the paper traces the typical features the historical development of kangliang structural technique through logical construction. By focusing on the key clues related to building hierarchy, framework forms, construction joints, and spatial layout, the paper ultimately reveals the key characteristics and overall trends of kangliang structures at different evolutionary stages. This paper re-examines kangliang structural technique within the context of the interaction between ancient Chinese high-grade buildings and folk buildings, providing important clues for the regional evolution of wooden framework construction technique.
