Heritage and Urbanism in the Galapagos Islands, Applicability of Methodological Strategies for Their Valuation

Galapagos Islands are an archipelago formed by 13 volcanic islands, located 972 km from the coast of Ecuador, which are a natural heritage for humanity since 1978. Santa Cruz is taken as a study case in which 17 places of cultural value have been identified. The objective of the research is to analyze the relationships of the intangible heritage as a resource for urban and tourist development. The method for education and enhancement of urban heritage provides the settlers conceptual and methodological tools so that from the architectural discipline and environmental sustainability can contribute with technical solutions which involve heritage with development. The starting point is the recognition of sites with heritage value in which it is desired to generate a network of urban heritage spaces and followed by the evaluation for the diagnosis of the problematic and impacts associated to each space to derivate in the construction of intervention criteria that evidence the value of the referents that the local community is identified and integrate it. The challenges presented by these sites for their integration are then understood, as a recovery practice of natural areas of existing grids, with the idea of rehabilitating depressed or conflict areas, to integrate them again into the environment according to appropriate environmental criteria.
