The Clock Tower from the Romanian city of Giurgiu was built in the period 1770–1780, by the Ottoman authorities, as part of extensive works executed for military purposes for the fortification of the city and the Giurgiu fortress. It was designed as a component part of the fortification system, with the main role of an observation tower, especially military, but also civilian (“firehouse” for the constructions of the city, executed mainly on a wooden structure and vulnerable to destruction due to fires). The cross section of the tower is hexagonal, with variable section. The height of the tower is approximately 22 m, being the highest construction of the city for a period of almost 200 years. The initial execution has used stone masonry blocks for the perimeter walls (on the outside) and for the base of the tower. Over the time, this construction was affected by significant degradations, due to non-conforming structure for a seismic zone, a weak foundation ground and was massively destroyed during the First World War. The first major restoration works of the Clock Tower were executed in 1934 by Horia Teodoru (1894–1976), the most important Romanian restorer architect and consisted of the rehabilitation of the stone block masonry, the introduction of reinforced concrete elements and the restoration of the wood structure from the top of the tower. The structural improvements from 1934 ensured the protection of this construction under the action of severe earthquakes since 1940, 1977, 1986 and 1990. In present, the Clock Tower from the city of Giurgiu is classified, in Romania, as a historical architectural monument of national and universal value.
