The church of the Company of Jesus in Quito (Ecuador), built between 1605 and 1765, is one of the most remarkable examples of Latin American baroque, where religious activity is still maintained in line with the daily tourist visit. The characterization of the surface stone used in the construction of the main façade is essential to verify the chronology of the church’s construction. In this context, the stone façade, covered by a lime mortar with a color treatment imitating marble, known as ‘jasper’, was the last architectural and construction element of the church in 1765. In the mid-20th century, this mortar was removed, and the volcanic stone was left as it is known today. It has been possible to take and study 3 stone samples from the front façade with the non-destructive testing protocols and standards recommended by the research team. Analyses and tests included: X-ray diffraction (XRD) mineralogical characterization, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) chemical characterization and morphological and textural characterization using stereo microscopy, petrographic microscopy (MO) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX). The chemical characterization has allowed us to classify the stone in the TAS diagram as an andesite with 60.30% SiO2 and 4.08% Na2O + K2O, like the volcanic rocks of the Western Cordillera of Ecuador. The characterization of the stone of the façade and the previous study carried out on the lime and plaster mortars of the church of the Company of Jesús have allowed us to verify the hypothesis of the constructive stages recorded in the church.
