The renovating technique applied for a historic stone sculpture located on the façade of the 19th-century building of the municipal theater in Cracow is presented and discussed in detail. A large fragment of this figure, constituting the personification of the Comedy and weighing approximately 30 kg, detached on June 16, 2019, fell to the ground and was completely defragmented after hitting the pavement. The direct cause of the destruction of the body of described sculpture turned out to be advanced corrosion of the steel flat bar attaching the historic figure to façade wall. The significant degradation of limestone integrity from which that sculpture had been made was considered an indirect cause. In this case, the critical weakening of the material was the result of long-term chemical interaction of the stone with the polluted atmosphere in the historic city center. On at least one third of the detachment surface, after a fragment of the figure detached, around the corroded flat bar traces of the presence of a crack were revealed, the growth of which was caused by the swelling of iron hydroxide which was one of the corrosion products. In the course of the research, a significant destructive impact on the deteriorating technical condition of the sculpture was ruled out by public light-sound concerts taking place irregularly nearby.
