Analysis of the Failure Modes of Historical Buildings Damaged by Multiple Earthquakes

Historical buildings in seismic zones have accumulated and recorded local or partial failures of load-bearing structural elements. Today, it is difficult to identify the most effective reinforcement solutions for historical buildings over 200 years old, damaged by numerous earthquakes, that meet the requirements of the Venice Charter. The process of identifying the most reversible reinforcement solutions is complex because interventions over time have been carried out only in certain areas of the building using different construction techniques and materials, which are not clearly defined or located. The paper presents the identified failure mechanisms of the load-bearing structure of the Saints Archangels Michael and Gabriel Church in Craiova, Romania, recorded after the earthquakes of 1838, 1894, 1908, 1940, 1977, and 1990, and the reinforcement solutions used after each earthquake. The latter part of the paper presents the modern in-situ investigation methods used, employing non-destructive investigation techniques, how the failure mechanisms were identified and validated through dynamic analyses using computational programs, and the proposed reinforcement solutions.
