Volker Kutscher takes a distinct and more assertive approach to incorporating self-reflective elements into his narrative. This chapter focuses on the first novel in the Gereon Rath series, Babylon Berlin (2016; the German original Der nasse Fisch was published in 2007), though the next five books in the series are also considered in the analysis. Special attention is given to the numerous instances of writing within the story, which I refer to as intradiegetic writing. When a character in the novel writes an account of the events we’ve just read, writing becomes not only a narrative act but a means of drawing the reader’s focus to the process of writing itself. The past, in this context, is presented as the result of a creative endeavor, one that follows its own agenda and is inherently subjective and biased.
