In the Region of Murcia, there are native breeds in a critical situation such as the Chato Murciano pig, the Murcian Hen, or the Murciano-Levantina cow, but also other native breeds “in development” such as the Murciano-Granadina goat, which in recent years have been the subject of various studies within the Animal Genetic Improvement and Livestock Development Team belonging to the Department of Aquaculture and Animal Production Technology of the Murcian Institute of Agrarian and Environmental Research and Development (IMIDA), among them, those of the reproductive type. To safeguard the genetics of threatened breeds and to improve reproductive results in the case of native breeds “in development,” a Germplasm Bank composed of male gametes has been created for each of them. Currently, these seminal doses continue to be maintained in liquid nitrogen containers, which in the case of threatened breeds means the protection of very valuable genetic material that may need to be used in the future. However, the maintenance of these doses is not free of problems that must be solved by studying other alternatives that allow their maintenance more sustainably and economically. Furthermore, the necessary and inevitable path towards the most advanced technologies leads to the use of these smart technologies also in the field of reproduction to achieve greater efficiency and better yields.
