The promise of democracy can never be fully divorced from the threat of authoritarianism. Embedded in the hopes and aspirations of democracy is the constant fear that the passions, prejudice and self-interests we all possess may overwhelm reason, and lead us to betray the “better angels” of our beings and descend into the abyss of authoritarianism. After all, as we are reminded, mother’s milk nourishes the saint as well as the sinner.

摘要

The promise of democracy can never be fully divorced from the threat of authoritarianism. Embedded in the hopes and aspirations of democracy is the constant fear that the passions, prejudice and self-interests we all possess may overwhelm reason, and lead us to betray the “better angels” of our beings and descend into the abyss of authoritarianism. After all, as we are reminded, mother’s milk nourishes the saint as well as the sinner.
