This chapter turns the focus to longer-running systems of class-, race-, and gender-based domination. In drawing on critical feminist literature—largely from scholars in the Autonomist Marxist tradition, including Federici (2004), Vogel (2013) and Fortunati (1995, 2007)—I look at how this highly feminized nature of teaching work has emerged out of the patriarchal division of labor between the productive and reproductive realm, with women historically relegated to the latter in the un- and under-compensated roles of housewives, care workers, domestic workers, and, ultimately, teachers. I also contend that these class-, race-, and gender dynamics are integral to understanding the battles over education, given that teaching has historically been singled out for disciplinary reforms because of its highly feminized nature.
