Cancer care includes personalized treatment procedures over long periods that require continuous monitoring and frequent consultations with specialized healthcare professionals. This constitutes cancer care to be a complex and expensive procedure both financially and timewise, without the utilization of modern, digital, and assistant tools. Telemonitoring and teleconsultation technologies have emerged in the form of digital tools that aim on addressing these challenges in ways that assist both doctors and patients to smoothen and ease the treatment and monitoring procedures of cancer care and other diseases. Telemonitoring eases the continuous, remote patient monitoring through smart devices and tools that track vital signs, symptoms, treatment side effects, etc. Teleconsultation supports the remote interactions between the patients and healthcare providers, reducing the unnecessary visits thus improving efficiency, and at the same time reduce risks, and reduce financial strain on the patient, and the healthcare systems. These technologies promote personalized, data-driven cancer care, that enables faster response time to complications and improves access to specialized care for cancer patients. However, challenges remain in areas such as data privacy, security, digital literacy of patients and clinicians’ integration of artificial intelligence for real-time decision support, and integration with the patient’s personal medical records. This chapter explores the underlying technologies, benefits, and description of some case studies related to telemonitoring and teleconsultation with a particular focus in cancer care. This chapter concludes with insights into ongoing research challenges and future directions in this rising field.
