This article examines the efficacy of Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drones, specifically the Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2, in Sub-Saharan African conflicts. While MALE drones have demonstrated effectiveness in various global conflicts, their impact in Africa is constrained by vast distances, challenging environments, and complex internal and cross-border conflict dynamics. Case studies from the region that include Niger and Ethiopia reveal that these factors blunt the operational capabilities of drones like the TB2. Despite these limitations, the absence of modern integrated air defenses in the region allows MALE drones to remain lethal precision weapons, particularly in targeting supply lines and isolated groups. However, the success of these drones depends on competent operation, their employment in sufficient quantities, and adequate support infrastructure, which are often lacking in the region. We conclude that while MALE drones offer tactical advantages, they are unlikely to significantly alter the course of conflicts in Sub-Saharan Africa. In short, they are not the game-changing weapons that some analysts claim them to be.
