Currently, unmanned systems are categorised between domain issues and limited operating characterisation. This multiplicity of categorisations has led to the fragmentation of knowledge between aerial systems and unmanned systems operating in other domains of war, and secondly, a focus on the concrete characteristics of unmanned aerial platforms at the expense of less observable features such as purpose and cyber issues. Lastly, the focus on the platform itself de-emphasizes important considerations that are embedded into the system in which the platform exists. This chapter proposes that a general discussion of theoretical frameworks so as to enable a broader conceptualisation of Unmanned Systems as a phenomenon. The authors argue that unmanned systems should be conceptualised broadly to include all domains (of war) and to conceptualise the typology at the system rather than platform level. Within such a broad framework, multiple characterisation points can be accommodated to identify cross-cutting similarities between unmanned systems. At the same time, the unmanned space can be achieved beyond the platform.
