Cybernetics has been ‘naturalised’ as a model of capitalism and as a future utopian system. However, this naturalisation makes heroic assumptions concerning the nature of social systems. In particular, capitalism is a conflictual system dependent on visceral human labour power and not a cybernetic system, and not all utopian projects are collapsible to cybernetic ones. Cybernetic blueprint utopias would reproduce exploitation, hierarchy and oppression. In contrast, we show how alternative collective forms and radical epistemologies and pedagogies produce the possibility of prefigurative utopia.
