The Utopian Promise of Cybernetics
摘要
Cybernetics has often been connected with concepts of utopia. It offers an approach to creating blueprints for the operation and control of organisms and organisations. With antecedents in management and organisational theory, sociology and psychology, cybernetics acts to colonise other social theories. Cybernetics has been employed by theorists and activists across the political spectrum, from the progressive Left to the dark enlightenment right and in some anarchist positions and practices. It also informs what has come to be known as the ‘Californian Ideology’. It is also connected with aspects of influential social theories including OOO (Object-Orientated Ontology) and ANT (Actor Network Theory). However, underlying these positions are cybernetic concepts of systematisation and control.
