Home Literacy Environment: The Link Between Parents’ Attitudes Towards Literacy, Parents’ Expectations and Children’s Literacy Skills in Greek
摘要
This chapter aims to review the studies on home literacy environment and its effect on various literacy skills in Greek. The majority of studies on home literacy environment in Greek have examined the opportunities parents provide to their children in order to facilitate their interaction with literacy materials, the teaching practices they employ in order to enhance their children’s code-related skills, and the broader attitudes and expectations they hold for their children’s literacy skills. In general, the findings of these studies suggest that home literacy environment influences reading fluency and comprehension through multiple pathways and that children’s own language and literacy skills may also influence some aspects of the home literacy environment. The effects of home literacy environment on literacy skills in Greek likely reflect a cultural transmission, which seems to impact broader academic areas, such as mathematics.
