The Home Literacy Model (HLM) has productively guided research on the impact home literacy environment has on children’s literacy development for over 20 years. In this chapter, we first review the original HLM and the related research. We then discuss the findings that the HLM does not account for and suggest that the model needs to be extended both in terms of its coverage and the relationships between the included components. Finally, we propose a Developmental Systems Home Literacy Model to guide future theorizing about how the home literacy environment is conceptualised and interacts with the child and the broader contextual factors to produce typical and atypical literacy outcomes.
